SEO Fundamentals
The foundational guide on how search engine optimization works: crawling, relevance, authority, and the levers that move organic rankings.
What SEO actually is
Search engine optimization is the practice of making a website the answer people are looking for. When someone searches, a search engine tries to return the most relevant, trustworthy pages for that query. SEO is the work of earning those positions by making your site easy to find, easy to understand, and clearly worth trusting.
It helps to think of SEO as three connected jobs: getting your pages discovered, proving they are relevant to what people search, and building the authority that makes a search engine confident enough to rank you.
How search engines work
Before you can rank, a search engine has to find and understand your pages. It crawls the web by following links, reads what it finds, and stores those pages in an index. When someone searches, it selects and orders results from that index based on hundreds of signals. If your pages are slow, blocked, or confusing to crawl, none of the rest matters, which is why technical health is the foundation.
The core ranking levers
- Relevance. Content that clearly matches what a searcher wants, informed by real keyword and intent research rather than guesswork.
- Content quality and depth. Pages that answer the question thoroughly and better than the alternatives, organized around topics instead of scattered posts.
- Authority. Signals that your site is trusted, earned through relevant links, demonstrated expertise, and a strong reputation.
- Technical health. Speed, crawlability, mobile-friendliness, and structured data that help engines read and trust your site.
- User experience. A site people can actually use, which keeps them engaged and sends positive signals back to search engines.
Why intent beats keywords
Modern SEO is about intent, not just keywords. Two people typing similar words can want very different things, one ready to buy and one just researching. Great SEO maps those intents and builds pages that satisfy each one, which is also what makes content legible to the AI systems now summarizing search.
