Local Search Ranking Factors Study 2024
Published September 15, 2024 · Research by Cliff Tillery
Abstract
An analysis of ranking signals across 1,200 local businesses in the Southeast United States, examining which factors most strongly correlate with Map Pack visibility. The study finds that Google Business Profile signals, review velocity, and citation consistency remain the dominant levers for local ranking, with review recency emerging as an increasingly important differentiator.
Methodology
We analyzed Map Pack rankings for 1,200 businesses across home services, healthcare, and legal categories in 40 Southeast metro areas over a six-month period. For each business we captured Google Business Profile completeness, category configuration, review count, average rating, review velocity and recency, citation consistency across 25 major directories, and estimated backlink authority. We then modeled the correlation between each signal and average Map Pack position, controlling for search proximity.
Findings
Google Business Profile completeness and correct primary category selection showed the strongest relevance correlation. Among prominence signals, review velocity (reviews earned per month) and review recency correlated more strongly with ranking than raw review count alone, businesses earning steady recent reviews outranked those with larger but stagnant review totals. Citation consistency remained a meaningful trust signal, with inconsistent NAP data correlating with measurably lower visibility. Backlink authority mattered most in the highly competitive legal category.
Overview
This study examines what actually moves local search rankings across the Southeast United States. While Google never publishes its algorithm, large-scale correlation analysis reveals consistent, actionable patterns, and this year’s data reinforces a clear hierarchy of levers for local businesses.
Why review velocity beat review count
Perhaps the most actionable finding is that recent review activity outperformed raw totals. A business with 40 reviews earned steadily over the past year frequently outranked competitors with 200 older reviews. This suggests Google treats review recency as a freshness and legitimacy signal, and it means review generation must be an ongoing system, not a one-time push.
Practical implications
- Complete and actively maintain your Google Business Profile.
- Build a system for steady, recent reviews rather than chasing a big one-time total.
- Audit and fix citation inconsistencies, they carry a real, measurable penalty.
- In competitive categories like legal, invest in genuine authority and backlinks.
