What Is GEO?
A plain-language explanation of Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), how it differs from traditional SEO, and why it matters for your business.
The short answer
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It is the practice of making your business easy for AI answer engines to understand, trust, and cite. When someone asks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, or Perplexity a question, those tools read across the web, build an answer, and name a few sources. GEO is the work that helps your business become one of those named sources instead of being left out of the answer entirely.
Why a new term was needed
For two decades, search meant a list of links, and SEO was about earning a high spot on that list. That world is still here, but a growing share of searches now end with a written answer at the top of the page or inside a chat window. The customer reads the summary and often never scrolls to the links below it. Ranking well no longer guarantees that anyone sees you, because the answer engine may summarize the topic without ever mentioning your name.
GEO is the response to that shift. It keeps everything good about SEO and adds a focus on being quoted inside the generated answer, not just listed beneath it.
How GEO differs from SEO
The two overlap heavily, and strong SEO is still the foundation. The difference is the target:
- SEO aims to rank a page for a query. GEO aims to make your content the part of the answer the model chooses to repeat.
- SEO rewards pages that satisfy a searcher. GEO also rewards content a machine can lift cleanly, with clear claims and consistent facts.
- SEO leans on links and keywords. GEO leans just as hard on entity clarity, structured data, and demonstrated expertise.
Because the signals overlap, most of what earns citations in AI search also helps you in classic search. You are extending your work, not throwing it away.
What GEO actually involves
At a practical level, GEO focuses on a few things. It makes your business a clear entity so a model knows exactly who you are and where you serve. It structures content so answers are easy to extract and quote. It adds the kind of genuine authority, through expert authorship and original research, that makes a system treat you as reliable. And it keeps your facts consistent everywhere they appear online, because contradictions make a model less likely to trust you.
Where this is heading
AI search is still young, which is exactly why it is worth attention now. The businesses that make themselves legible to answer engines early can earn a presence in a channel most competitors have not thought about yet. You do not need gimmicks. You need clarity, structure, and real expertise, applied deliberately.
