Search Engine Optimization (SEO): An Introduction
Think of where people turn to find solutions to their problems? Google? Bing? Some other search engine?
More than 60% of Americans turn to Google to find what they’re looking for- whether that’s a product, a service, something to eat or do. It’s where your business needs to be seen. Is your business on page one?
If not, you can be sure that your competitors are. This means all the targeted search traffic that you’d like to see your business get is going to them instead. SEO is exactly that- a way of making your website more visible to the search engines so that the very people who are looking for you find and select you.
Of course, good SEO begins with a solid website. While more than a third of all websites online now days are built with WordPress, that’s a solid platform to use for your business website. Beyond the platform, it’s important to make sure your website has what your customers are looking for. That’s where your content plays a huge role along with a conversion focused layout.
SEO Begins With Understanding How Search Engines Work
Have you ever stopped to think about how Google actually works? Most of us have heard that there is a search “algorithm” that changes all the time, but what exactly is the algorithm?
At Make It Loud, we teach how Google works by making a comparison to the cute little yellow guys or minions. Google has little minions or “spy bots” with cameras that go all around the Internet and take vacation pictures of their trip. These pictures are snapshots of all the websites they’ve visited. They take these vacation photos and put them into a photo album. So, when you and I search Google, we’re actually only searching those photo albums- not the entire Internet.
So, when the minions crawl your site, they have a long list of items they check your site for. Each of these items is weighed differently- in terms of how much they matter regarding your rankings. For the most part, this is what changes when they say the algorithm has changed (although there are times when Google changes something drastically).
All this is important to understand so that you know what’s important to Google. One thing that will most likely never change is the idea that whatever is important to your customers is important to the search engines. It’s a rule of thumb we go by whenever we’re doing SEO for our clients.
How To Do SEO
When clients hire us to do SEO, it’s almost like there’s an adoption process. We dive into their business to learn as much as we can. The more we know, the more we can get into the minds of their customers. Why start there? It’s how we begin to understand what your customers type into the Google search bar. This begins the process of understanding a winning keyword strategy.
Once we feel we have that level of understanding, we begin writing- page titles, meta descriptions (not to get too nerdy) and most importantly, landing pages. Our goal is to create the kind of content that will help Google see that your business deserves page one for the excellent content.
Once we have the content strategy, we make review the site architecture and adjust this to what, in our experience, Google is looking for. After that, we work on the technical aspects of SEO.
Our Service Area
We provide social media marketing to companies all over Maine and the rest of the country, but over the years, we’ve worked with clients in Portland, Lewiston, Bangor, South Portland and Auburn.
Make It Loud’s SEO experts do everything possible to safely move your website’s rankings to page one as part of a strategy that puts your business in front of potential customers.
How Long Does SEO Take?
In nearly 10 years of doing SEO, we’ve heard some pretty outrageous claims about SEO. A few years ago, one of our competitors claimed he recently got a “plumber’s website ranked for more than 847 keywords in a week”. One of our colleagues leaned over and asked, “Is that even possible?”. Let’s just say that if it sounds too good to be true, it more than likely is.
Search engine optimization is about expectations though. Most SEO companies will tell you that it takes 3-6 months to get your site ranked well. The truth is that this depends upon things like your industry, your competition and the geographical area you’re trying to rank for. In most cases, we’re able to get results long before the 3-month mark. We’ve had several national SEO campaigns rank for several hundred keywords across the country within a month after launching.

Pick An SEO Company
Good or bad, there are a lot of agencies out there that say they do search engine optimization, but not all SEO companies are equal.
It’s just a fact that SEO nerds can speak nerdy to you. When you ask them what exactly they do to get your website ranked, they reel off a lot of technical terms like “alt tags, H1 tags, page load speeds, schema markup, blah, blah, blah”. Some of it makes sense and some the jargon leaves people in the dust.
The thing to keep in mind is that SEO is like putting a 10,000 piece together. The company that puts the most pieces together wins a spot on page one (or put another way, has the most items the minions are looking for). While most SEO consultants can spout off all the jargon, it doesn’t mean all that stuff actually gets your site to page one.
It’s like going to the doctor’s office. Every doctor can speak medical jargon, but can they explain what’s wrong with you? SEO nerds can “Wow” you with terms you don’t understand but don’t actually mean much, so beware the jargon talkers.
Here are some things to consider when picking an SEO firm:
- Experience– your business visibility is too important to trust with newbies.
- Explanation– can they explain what they’re going to do to get your site ranked?
- Educated– are they up on SEO trends and changes.
- Content-(we broke the “E” thing, dang it) will they be writing content for you? This is huge.
At Make It Loud, we understand that Google is looking for the best content about your business to serve up to people looking for it. If your SEO nerd isn’t writing content for you, make sure someone is.
