There are a lot of business owners who understand that they want to be at the top of the search results, but they don’t know that SEO is even a thing. We’re happy to explain it all.
Ten years ago, when we started doing SEO for our clients, we ran into a lot of SEO “experts” that made it all sound super mysterious, and the truth is, there is a lot of jargon that can get confusing. But, we’re happy to explain it simply for you.
Our definition of SEO is basic. We think SEO is doing the right thing by Google (the biggest search engine on the planet). This means having an excellent website with good content that’s easy for the browser to navigate and understand. That’s where good SEO begins.
In most industries, doing search engine optimization is an ongoing process, but we’ve had situations where just doing a little has helped increase the traffic and visibility for a considerable amount of time.
A Brief Introduction To SEO
Think of where people turn to find solutions to their problems. The Internet. I think it’s safe to say it’s more than a fad.
The fact is that more than 60% of Americans turn to Google to find what they’re looking for- whether that’s a product, a service, something to eat or for entertainment. It’s where your business needs to be seen. Is your business on page one?

Understanding SEO Begins With Understanding How Search Engines Work
Have you ever stopped to think about how Google actually works? Most of us have heard that there is a search “algorithm” that changes all the time, but what exactly is the algorithm?
At Make It Loud, we teach how Google works by making a comparison to the cute little yellow guys or minions. Google has little minions or “spy bots” with cameras that go all around the Internet and take vacation pictures of their trip. These pictures are snapshots of all the websites they’ve visited. They take these vacation photos and put them into a photo album. So, when we search Google, we’re actually only searching those vacation photo albums- not the entire Internet. Is your mind blown?
So, when the minions crawl your site, they have a long list of items they check your site for. Each of these items is weighted differently- in terms of how much they matter regarding your rankings. For the most part, this is what changes when they say the algorithm has changed (although there are times when Google changes something drastically).
All this is important to understand so that you know what’s important to Google. One thing that will most likely never change is the idea that whatever is important to your customers is important to the search engines. It’s a rule of thumb we go by whenever we’re doing SEO for our clients.
Doing SEO On A Bad Website
For many years now, we’ve had a retail shop along a major highway. People often come in and want to talk to us about a wide variety of digital marketing topics which we love. It’s not that unusual to have people come in and want to talk about SEO.
Our process is simple. We bring them back into our conference room and take a look at their present website. We do a fairly quick evaluation to see how well their site is performing. There was a two-month period awhile back where we had 10 people come in asking about SEO. When we looked at their website, none were ready for SEO. Some of the problems included:
- Poorly designed websites
- Saturated industry (real estate, divorce attorneys)
- Website performance issues
SEO can be an incredible marketing vehicle, but there are times when it’s a flat bad idea. For the most part, SEO is a losing proposition for a website that isn’t designed well, had bad coding, is built on a platform that Google doesn’t play well with or has other performance issues.
We don’t accept clients for SEO when we come across situations described above for very simple reasons- it makes no sense! Why take on a project that you can’t win. How Long Does SEO Take?
In the 10 years, we’ve been doing SEO, we’ve heard some pretty outrageous claims about SEO. A few years ago, we were sitting at a networking meeting where one of our competitors claimed he recently got a “plumber’s website ranked for more than 847 keywords in a week”. A friend leaned over and asked, “Is that even possible?”. Let’s just say that if it sounds too good to be true, it more than likely is.
Search engine optimization has a lot to do with expectations. Most SEO companies will tell you that it takes 3-6 months to get your site ranked well. While this isn’t a lie exactly, the truth is that this depends upon things like your industry, your competition and the geographical area you’re trying to rank for. In most cases, we’re able to get results long before the 3-month mark. In fact, it’s extremely rare that we can’t get significant results in a month. We’ve had several national SEO campaigns rank for several hundred keywords across the country within a month after launching. These are results we’re very proud of.

There are many different companies that say they do SEO, but it’s important to understand a few things about selecting the right SEO company. Lots of SEO nerds will explain what they do in technical terms that sound impressive but don’t move your site up the rankings.
